Job Description
Penman Consulting have a vacancy for an Environmental Scientist.
The Environmental Scientist should have a masters or doctoral degree in a science discipline, or environmental science/engineering, or related disciplines. The successful applicant must have skills in ecotoxicology, but it would be advantageous to also have multi-disciplinary skills in environmental fate, chemistry, computational modelling, and environmental hazard and risk assessments, and be competent to provide science in those areas. The applicant will be required to provide support in the preparation of strategies for compliance with chemicals legislation for some complex cases (such as UVCBs), influence stakeholders and clients of Penman Consulting, and act as a partner to Penman Consulting clients in the delivery of compliant dossiers under Chemical regulatory schemes. This role is also expected to heavily involve the generation of new data for these complex substances which involves the monitoring of ecotoxicity and environmental fate studies at Contract Research Organisations.
This permanent role will be flexible and will adapt to the skills of the job holder allowing significant scope for further development arising from the growth of the business. We are open to hybrid working for applicants based in the UK or Belgium. Regular attendance will be required at our offices in Oxfordshire, UK or in Brussels, Belgium.
The major focus will be the work Penman Consulting does in supporting its clients with achieving compliance with the regulatory requirements for environmental assessments, by applying innovative approaches and supervising experimental studies to generate any necessary data requirements.
The successful candidates will work within a multidisciplinary team with project managers, regulatory specialists, toxicologists, environmental scientists, exposure scientists and IT specialists.

The position will emphasise the need for continued professional development and candidates will be expected to continue learning with an emphasis on environmental hazard assessment, study monitoring and global regulatory developments. This will be through self-learning and mentoring programmes, attendance of external courses and scientific meetings for approximately 10-20 % of the jobholder’s overall time, as agreed with their mentor and in line with Company policy.

Job requirements
- Knowledge of ecotoxicology
- Knowledge of test guidelines for data generation under international regulatory schemes (in particular OECD)
- Experience in monitoring experimental studies on chemicals, in particular under OECD guidelines
- Experience with Global/EU REACH chemicals regulation
- Experience in the use and assessment of QSAR tools, such as EPISUITE, OECD QSAR toolbox, Catalogic, etc
- A capacity for systems thinking and working with multiple stakeholders in industrial and regulatory settings
- Willingness to learn and master wider areas of scientific knowledge.
- Excellent organisational, analytical, interpersonal, and communication (written and oral) skills
- The ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
- Be comfortable working in the English language, and other languages are advantageous
- Be eligible to work in the EU or UK
Essential experience
- Experience in conducting environmental hazard assessments and PBT assessments, in particular considering groups of substances/categories.
- Familiarity with complex substances (difficult to test, UVCBs).
- Experience in chairing or organizing working groups of diverse stakeholders
- Experience in conducting environmental risk assessments and using associated tools (CHESAR, Petrorisk).
