Environmental Sciences

Our multidisciplinary environmental sciences team specialises in environmental fate and behaviour of chemicals and ecotoxicology.

Introduction

Our multidisciplinary Environmental Sciences team specialises in environmental fate and behaviour of chemicals and ecotoxicology. Their combination of experience comes from working in industry, government organisations, regulatory agencies and on a research level. The team works extensively with the latest industry software applications (EPISUITE, ECOSAR, QSAR Toolbox, OPERA, VEGA, KNIME, Petrorisk, Petrotox, CATALOGIC, Metapath) and is highly experienced in managing large and complex programmes.

The environmental sciences team have developed successful testing strategies for many complex cases, including large categories of substances and difficult-to-test chemicals. A key area of their expertise is producing compliant dossiers and PBT assessments for chemical substances, including complex cases like UVCBs.

The successful combination of targeted testing, application of QSAR models and building read-across argumentations applied by our team of experts allows them to produce robust environmental assessments in an intelligent way, minimizing the experimental testing needed. This approach enables the clients to expedite their assessments for several substances simultaneously, allows financial savings, and contributes to the overall objective of minimising testing without compromising the regulatory acceptance of the results.

Testing Approaches

Even in cases where standard testing approaches are of limited validity, we have been able to devise and supervise bespoke scientific projects to satisfy regulatory requirements. This includes representing our clients in meetings with experts from regulatory bodies to explain and defend the suitability of non-standard approaches.

The team keeps aware of regulatory and scientific developments in the fields of environmental toxicology and fate, allowing them to propose different methodologies and to prepare preemptively for new requirements and challenges in the field of environmental hazard assessment.

Services

Our environmental science services cover the assessment of both ecotoxicology and environmental fate data and include, amongst others:

  • Use of scientific and regulatory expertise to identify data gaps preventing regulatory submissions.
  • Development of testing strategies to fill gaps for environmental endpoints.
  • Application of QSAR modelling to fill data gaps or prioritise constituents of concern, including development of compliant QSAR documentation.
  • Coordination with CROs to commission studies and study monitoring for physicochemical, fate and terrestrial/aquatic toxicity endpoints.
  • Development of PBT/PMT positions and assessments.
  • Application of NAMs for regulatory purposes (such as category read-across for ecotoxicological/environmental fate endpoints).
  • Client representation vis-à-vis regulatory authorities.
